A softball team in Texas learned a valuable lesson about sportsmanship during the championship game. Members of the Wylie High School softball team probably never imagined it would happen this way.
Wylie High School had a 6-2 lead over their foes, McKinny North High, entering the bottom of the seventh inning. McKinny was able to score two runs to close the gap to 6-4. They loaded the bases, but they also had two outs. They were a mere one out away from elimination.
On the flip side. Wylie High School was one out from winning. After a routine ground ball, the shortstop fielded it with no problem and flipped it to Second Base. The players from Wylie erupted in celebration. They had just won the championship game! But not so fast…
The player was never called out. The game was still going. While they celebrated, McKinney’s players continued to run and circle the bases. They managed to get three runs by the time Wylie realized their mistake, scrambled for the ball, and ended the play.
Wylie could do nothing but look on in shock. It’s a moment that neither team will ever forget.
