Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Troy Tulowitzki suffered a small “chip fracture” in his right thumb, according to manager John Gibbons, after being hit in the hand by a Chris Tillman pitch during Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.Gibbons told reporters after the Blue Jays’ 6-2 loss that Tulowitzki will be re-evaluated in the next couple of days.

“A little sore, it obviously got me pretty good, it’s blown up,” said Tulowitzki, whose thumb was swollen and in a brace following the game. “That’s all I can really say right now.”

During his sixth-inning at-bat, Tulowitzki took a 93-mph fastball on his hand and grimaced in pain. He initially remained in the game, taking his base at first and even making a clean play in the seventh inning, but failed to take his position in the eighth.

Tulowitzki said he’s hoping to avoid the disabled list and will try and grip his bat Sunday, according to reporters.

In his at-bat before getting hit, Tulowitzki launched a massive home run off Tillman that ended up just shy of Rogers Centre’s fifth deck.

Severity notwithstanding, the diagnosis comes at a most inopportune time for both the Blue Jays and Tulowitzki, who appeared to be finally settling in with Toronto after battling injuries and inconsistency at the plate. Entering Sunday’s game, Tulwitzki was hitting .291/.333/.543 with nine homers and five doubles since being activated from the DL in the middle of June following a quad strain.

Barely a month after being acquired from the Rockies last summer, Tulowitzki suffered a cracked shoulder blade during a game in September, and missed the final three weeks of the regular season.
