George Strait paid tribute to Merle Haggard at his Las Vegas Show on Friday April 22. Strait and his band played a medley of three different Haggard songs to honor the country singer who passed away on April 6.

The medley included the songs “Mama Tried,” “The Fightin’ Side of Me” and “My Life’s Been Grand.”

On the jumbo screens, images and video clips of Haggard flashed during the performance. The concert was one of Strait’s series of Vegas shows, Strait’s Sin City, at the T-Mobile Arena.

Strait addressed the audience, saying, “It was such a sad day for all of us because he was such a huge influence on me and all the guys up here. It’s so sad that we’ll never be able to see Merle perform live again. His music will live on forever.”

Like many others, Haggard was a musical hero to Strait. You may remember their 2014 Country Music Awards performance of “Salute to the Troops.” It’s definitely a great Haggard moment to revisit.

Check out the clip from Strait’s recent Haggard tribute performance captured by one of the 19,222 audience members in attendance.
