Selling over 80 million records worldwide, Barry Manilow is best known for such recordings as, Mandy, Can’t Smile Without You and Copacabana.
During a live concert at Carnegie Hall, Barry reflected on a time when he was a child and his grandfather realized the musical potential in his young grandson. Mr. Manilow Sr. used to take young Barry across the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan, to a little Record-Your-Voice booth. There he would encourage his grandson to just sing. Barry would refuse until one day, he just did. At that moment Barry said he connected with the music.
Years later, Barry played at Carnegie Hall and his grandfather watched with pride from the audience. Barry was quoted as saying,
“My grandfather was probably thinking, There is my grandson singing on stage at Carnegie Hall, just a block down from the little record-your-voice booth”.
His grandfather initiated Barry’s very first standing ovation that evening.
In order to support himself during his climb to stardom, Barry started out his musical career by writing jingles for commercials.
