While Khloé Kardashian has already shared some of her fitness secrets with the world, she’s finally opening about what she eats on a daily basis to maintain her slim figure—and pull off a 35 lb. plus weight loss.
In her new book, Strong Looks Better Naked, Kardashian unpacks her complex relationship with eating and fitness. Before she made the choice to get fit, she admits she had an unhealthy relationship with food.
“I was a mindless eater. I ate for comfort. I also ate out of boredom and habit. I ate when I was unhappy (which I’m sure many of you can relate to),” she writes. “I even ate chips because I love the crunchy sound they make. And I didn’t give much thought to what I was eating, or what I was putting inside my body, except hummus, of course, which is one of my weaknesses.”
When she was attending all of ex-husband Lamar Odon‘s basketball games, the temptation to mindlessly munch was too strong to resist.
“When Lamar and I were still together and we were both in Los Angeles, I never missed any of his basketball games. There are eighty-two games in a regular season, not to mention the play-offs, and at least half of those were at home, and during that first year you’d find me at every single one, eating nachos,” she writes. “It wasn’t until I began to work out in earnest that I became aware of what I was eating. When I became more mindful about exercise, I became more mindful about eating.”
Kardashian had an epiphany that changed everything..
“This is the only body I have. Why am I treating it so badly? And what am I going to do about it?” she writes.
Now, the reality star is committed to eating healthfully, while avoiding diets atall costs.
“I think most diets are torture, which is why I don’t believe in them. But, as is true with exercise, when you make a change and feel the benefits, you want to stick with it. And you know what else? If I want a piece of cake one night, I’ll have my piece of cake!” she writes.
Kardashian goes on to reveal a typical day of eating and working out:
5:00 a.m.: “I’m up bright and early and have a huge glass of water and a black coffee.”
6:00 a.m.: “I’m off to the gym, ready to sweat.”
8:00 a.m.: “Breakfast is another big glass of water, my ideal oatmeal, and a protein shake.”
11:00 a.m.: “I snack on an apple with peanut butter or fruit and nuts.”
1:00 p.m.: “Lunch is a Chinese chicken salad.”
3:00 p.m.: “Snack time! Homemade hummus, chopped veggies, edamame, and another big glass of water (this time infused with fruit).”
7:00 p.m.: “Time for dinner. I usually keep it pretty clean, and my favorite go-to is steamed veggies and fish served with my Magic Mash-Up [A cauliflower mash recipe that appears in her book.] and a glass of water of course.
9:00 p.m.: “I end my day with a bowl of fruit with plain Greek yogurt.”
As Kardashian became more interested in good food and nutrition, she started cooking more. On Sundays, she’ll invite friends and family over for a big meal, she writes … though she doesn’t always prep the healthiest food. “People love my breaded chicken, so I make that. And I eat it, too. (I told you: Don’t be a zealot.)” Though she’ll make sure to balance out the meal with fresh salads and vegetables.
Kardashian is sticking to her meal plan on her own terms, without the deprivation and torture and self-loathing of extreme diets or despised health foods. (Kardashian’s nemesis? Green juice.)
“I want to say about food, it’s this: Don’t diet. When you diet, you are basically setting yourself up for failure. I mean, the word die is in there! You’re not allowing yourself to enjoy the food you love, and it will only make you want it that much more. Make smart lifestyle changes, one baby step at a time.”
