Dear Blunt Betty,
What is the best gift to give a small child for Christmas? I am on a limited budget.
Give your child a gift that no amount of money can buy. Give your child the gift of being excited about giving to others instead of the excitement of receiving something.
Take this holiday season and have your kids pick out some canned goods for the food bank and have them take them there where the staff can fuss over how sweet the children are for thinking of others. Take them to the local pound, rescue, humane society and have them donate pet food, treats, newspapers whatever these places state they needed and give them a surprise card you made yourself in advance from the animals thanking your kids for helping them.
They don’t have to know it is from you, it is from the animals of course! Have them make Christmas cards for the elderly in nursing homes and take them there to pass them out and watch how the seniors pour love and appreciation onto your children for being so kind.
Your children will come to enjoy being praised for their good works. It will raise their self esteem. It will promote kindness and sincerity in them. It will teach them how to be aware of the world around them and what they can do to make the world a better place.
Make sure they know how special they are everyday, not just Christmas day,and the gifts under the tree might not be as important as you once thought. Cannot afford much? We as parents can all afford that.
